The last weekend before Christmas

So, happy Friday!  I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend planned.  We had our first real snow here this morning, but it's all gone now.  It rained the second half of the day and created a slushy mess.  Luckily, I got a few pictures before it was too late.

The storm is supposed to be a big one, but so far we have only had a lot of wind.  I am secretly hoping for a big blizzard and lots of cozy time at home.

I know I have been terrible with the Foodie Friday posts lately.  I promise they will be back after the holidays, when things are a little less hectic.  Until then, here is a great cookie recipe for you!

Have a great weekend.  See you Monday!

Giving to the men

So, it is finally here: the men's gift guide.  Now you have about 48 hours to get all your online shopping done for delivery by Christmas.

Like the other gift guides, all items on this guide are under 50 Dollars or Euros.  (I know that the two are not equal, but I personally spend the same amount on people in Euros as I would in Dollars even though they are worth more.  I think the general idea of the price limit is more important to me than the numbers themselves.)  The list is split in half this time, with gifts from the US on the right hand side and gifts from Europe on the left.  Most of them are from international stores or brands and can be found in both places.  So, have no fear if something you love seems to only be from the opposite side of the pond; it's probably available in both places if you choose the correct online store.

All of these choices are either boyfriend approved or recommended. Enjoy!

Men USA

1. My favorite notebooks.  Perfect for the writer in your life.
2.Three great bracelets from Urban Outfitters. (This first one is from a guitar strap!)
3. A personalized calendar.  Great for dad. (They are even cheaper--but less pretty--here.)
4. PJs!
5.Man music. This one is not my favorite, but it's approved by my boyfriend and my best friend.  Good for a rap/R&B lover.
6. Mortar and pestle, great for a hobby cook and guacamole lover!
7. Cozy sweater with elbow patches.

Men Europe

1. Nice cable knit sweater
2.  The best smelling cologne ever. (This amazon link says it is 52 Euros, but that must be for a massive bottle.  I have bought it several times for under 50 Euros in drogeries and department stores)
3. A cuddly scarf.
4. For the animal lover, a matching collar and leash with a manly look.
5. A sandwich maker.  Trust me he (and you) will LOVE it!
6. Apparently a really great whiskey for whiskey lovers.  (Peter has a bit of a whiskey obsession at the moment.)  Drink with 4 ice cubes, according to Peter.
7. And, of course, the Steve Jobs biography in English

For: Women, From: Europe

So, here it is!  The European gift guide.  I don't have so much time today, so I have only included the links.   All of these items are under 50 Euros or Pounds!  Enjoy.

Affordable holiday gift guide!

I wanted to make a gift guide but then I thought, "What qualifications do I have?!"  I am not particularly stylish and I am not in the fashion industry.  I don't live in L.A. or know all the latest designers.  I certainly don't spend a lot of money on stuff.  There are a million other gift guides out there, as anyone who is a regular blog reader knows.  What would I have to offer?

And then I realized there was one thing that I would do differently, one thing that most other blogs don't do: I would make the gift guide accessible and affordable.  Because, honestly, I have seen one too many gift guides with $75.00 candles on them.  And, really, who can afford that?  Who wants to?

So, I had a few criteria:  first,  all items had to be under $50 (or EUROS).  Second, the items had to be readily accessible via regular mall-type shops or online.  Third, they had to be something I would absolutely love to have myself or that I already use.

So read on and get inspired!

Women USA

1.  Bath and Body Works Signature Collection Body Butter in Twilight Woods  $15.00 and Filled Candle in Warm Vanilla Sugar $19.50
These are my two absolute favorite scents!  I love the body creams and butters but also want to try the Warm Vanilla Sugar candle for cozy nights in.  (P.S. My boyfriend remarks on how good I smell everytime I wear either of these scents.

2. H&M Mobile Phone Case in bright blue $3.95 (a great stocking stuffer).

3.  Old Navy Women's Chunky-Knit Cardigan $39.94.

4. Nordstrom Titanium 'Boyfriend' Watch $18.00

5. Okay, I lied.  This one may not be as easily available as I thought.  In the time it took me to make the collage and write the info in here, it left the website.  But it is a little bird box from West Elm.  Here are some adorable alternatives if you can't find it.

6.  Avon  Expert Mega Palette $29.99.  This one is on back order but it's smaller, just-as-cool little sister is available for $19.99.

7. Two Barn Owls No. 2 - Archival Print from Etsy $20.  Oh boy, have I been lusting after this.  May buy it for myself when Christmas is over! I LOVE Etsy.  They have affordable gifts you can buy without giving all your money to corporate America.  Yay for cute things you can feel good about.

8. Pretty Pansy Vase $18 and Rose of Sharon Grand Vase $28 both from Anthropologie.  I have been dying for the Pretty Pansy vase for like a year now.  But, then I saw the Rose of Sharon Vase.  I want them both desperately.  I couldn't choose my favorite so I put them both on here.

9. Women's the Rockstar Jeggings from Old Navy $34.94.  I love red jeans right now.  These come in petite and tall!

10. Blood Red Cable Knit Infinity Scarf from Anytime Scarf $39.00.

11.  Women's Patterned Cardigan from Old Navy $20.00 (originally $36.94).  I know I went a little crazy on the Old Navy stuff, but this cardigan is too cute!  I love cardigans and think this would look especially great with wide-leg work pants and a brightly colored belt.

12. Beaded 14K Gold Hoops $18.00 and Golden Feather French Barrette $16.00.  I have a special affinity for the jet black, olive and lipstick red colors.

13. Obey Seaport Convertible Glove from ShopAdorn.com $48.00.  These are by far the biggest splurge on my list, considering what you get for the price.  But, I love them and, because I live in the cold, it is usually worth it to splurge on gloves.  The great thing about convertible gloves is that they leave your hands free to do other things, like use an iPhone.  Here is another cute pair in case $48 seems way too steep.

The houses turn on their Christmas lights at night

This past Saturday, with the in-laws.  We went to a house that is crazy-lit by German standards (and only mildly crazy-lit by American) and then to the Christmas market for a Glühwein.

Coming tomorrow....

Via Callaloo Soup
Get ready! Tomorrow I will post some affordable gift guides! I know it's a little late but, if you are anything like me, you still have a TON of shopping to do.  I will feature gift guides for guys and girls, for Europe and the U.S.  I can't wait!  See you tomorrow!

Cute ideas for Christmas nails...without the cost of a manicure.

Via Refinery 29, Holiday Nail DIY

As you all know, I am all about the most bang for my buck.  When I do splurge, it is almost always on travel or on fun things for my apartment.  Most of my clothes come from H&M and when my best friend/hairdresser in California isn't doing my hair, the German version of Super Cuts is (which probably drives my best friend/hairdresser, who is actually amazing, crazy...especially when she has to fix unfixable botched bangs).

I almost never get manicures or pedicures, but when I do, I reserve them for a special occasion, like girl time with my sister or a birthday gift for a friend.  In my opinion, the only time it pays off to have someone else do something you can do to yourself is when there is some larger purpose to it.  (Unless of course, you hate travel and your big pleasure in life is a manicure and a pedicure, in which case it is money well spent.)

I do love soft, lovely feet and hands, though, so I tend to do manicures and pedicures on myself (when I have time).  Here are my tricks along with a link to a great slideshow of ideas for holiday nails.

****

1) Soak

I soak my feet and hands in a pot or tub of warm water and Dead Sea Salts.  A box of 3 huge packets of salt (enough for about 6 regular baths and 12 or more foot baths) costs about 2 EUROS at the drug store here.  I would add a little essential oil or bath oil for an extra special treat.

2) Exfoliate

For feet, use a pumice stone.  Use it on wet feet directly after soaking.  This loosens the dead skin.  Focus on the heels, balls of the feet and outer corners of toes

For hands, my favorite scrub to make at home is an olive oil (or butter) and brown sugar scrub.  I mix just a teaspoon or so of olive oil or butter with about three table spoons of brown sugar and scrub.  If it is too scratchy, add more olive oil until it is comfortable.

3) Moisturize

Layer a thick moisturizer onto your feet and hands (I prefer one with at least 5 % Urea) and put cuticle or nail oil on your nails (OPI makes a good avocado oil based one).  Tie plastic bags around your feet and hands and sit around on the computer or reading a book for about an hour while it soaks in (you can sleep like this too).

4) Paint

Base coat, two coats of pretty polish and top coat.  Let your nails dry completely between each coat.  This is the best thing I ever learned.  It really prevents smudging.  I never used to have the patience but then got so frustrated when my nails were wet for an hour and smudged.  Now I wait and sometimes come back hours later to finish.  It takes longer to get an end result but my nails almost never smudge and there is less down time waiting for them to dry.

5) Moisturize constantly

It is my secret to soft hands and feet.  I moisturize my feet and hands every night before bed and my hands whenever they feel dry.  I also always wear gloves when I do the dishes.  There is nothing worse for nails or skin than constant exposure to drying dish soap.

Check out these beautiful ideas for Christmassy nails.  I also love this idea.  Do it with a darker color (like red or forest green) to make it more Christmassy. You could also do a french tip in sparkles using the same method.
